Chunk It Up Free quilt pattern this pattern is not ours but Design Tracey Russell’s site www.apqs.com is the first time I saw this site that was indicated by a friend in a facebook group. Chunk It Up Free quilt pattern

Chunk It Up Free quilt pattern
Chunk It Up Free quilt pattern

Chunk It Up Free quilt pattern by Tracey Russell added two borders that nicely frame the blocks and provide another pop of color. As a longarm quilter, she knows how helpful it is to have outer borders that lay flat.

To help keep the quilt square and prevent the borders from waving, Tracey recommends cutting the outer border along the lengthwise grain of the fabric (parallel to the selvage.) It does mean you’ll need some extra fabric so that the border doesn’t have to be pieced. But if you’ve ever been disappointed by distorted or wavy borders on your quilt, you’ll find it’s well worth the extra yardage!

She used Fantastico thread by Superior Threads, along with Hobbs heirloom washable wool batting. The variegated thread sets off the fabric colors, and the extra loft the wool batting provides really makes the quilting pattern pop.

Now talking about the Chunk It Up Free quilt pattern from my point of view. I always like to give my opinion about the patterns I find on the internet or that some friend of mine makes, in this case until the fact of giving my opinion about this beautiful pattern I particularly almost didn’t know what to write, the reason?

I love the color blue and how it blends well with other colors, for example orange, yellow and white are wonderful colors that marry perfectly in any kind of pattern with the color blue.

Now we are going to give you some reasons why you should make this pattern and leave it at home, whether for personal use or to decorate the Chunk It Up Free quilt pattern:

The pattern is very beautiful and we can see that the patterns and the format are very reminiscent of the shoo fly pattern, if you don’t know the pattern you can see here how it is made. The red color reminds us of special occasions, so we can use this pattern for Christmas, for Valentine’s Day (in a picnic), Easter and other special occasions.

Below is some information about the pattern so you can decide whether to download it or not, (I highly recommend downloading the pdf).

  • Designer: Darlene Zimmerman
  • 3⁄8 yard of large red check for blocks
  • 3⁄8 yard of small red check for blocks
  • 8-1⁄8-yard pieces of assorted white prints for blocks
  • 1⁄2 yard of small red polka dot for inner border and sashing
  • 1 yard of red-and-white stripe for middle border and binding
  • 1-1⁄3 yards of large red polka dot for outer border
  • 2-3⁄4 yards of backing fabric
  • 49″ square of quilt batting
  • Finished quilt top: 43″ square
  • Finished block: 7-1⁄2″ square
  • Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42″ of usable fabric width.
  • Measurements include 1⁄4″ seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

1. For one block you’ll need one set of matching large or small red check pieces (four triangles and four 1-3⁄4×3″ rectangles) and one set of matching white print pieces (four triangles, four 1-3⁄4×3″ rectangles, and one 3″ square).

2. Sew together one red check triangle and one white print triangle to make a triangle-square (Diagram 1). Press the seam allowance toward the red check triangle. The pieced triangle-square should measure 3″ square, including the seam allowances. Repeat to make a total of four triangle-squares.

3. Sew together one red check rectangle and one white print rectangle to make a rectangle unit (Diagram 2). Press the seam allowance toward the red check rectangle. The pieced rectangle unit should measure 3″ square, including the seam allowances. Repeat to make a total of four rectangle units.

4. Referring to Diagram 3, lay out the four triangle-squares, the four rectangle units, and the white print 3″ square in three horizontal rows. Sew together the squares in each row. Press the seam allowances toward the rectangle units. Then join the rows to make a Churn Dash block. Press the seam allowances in one direction. The pieced Churn Dash block should measure 8″ square, including the seam allowances.

Now below you can see some photos and also some parts as materials used and tips on how to make this beautiful pillow. For you to have an idea an elaborate work like this is hard to see but not impossible to do. Below are some tips for you to make this beautiful pillow.

Supplies:

  •  3″ x 3″ squares of various prints of fabric, 18
  • 3″ x 3″ squares of stripe fabric, 18
  • 2″ x 15″  piece of border fabric, 2
  • 2″ x 18″ piece border fabric, 2
  • 2″ x 15″  piece of gridded interfacing, 2
  • 2″ x 18″ piece of gridded interfacing, 2
  • 18″ x 18″ piece of fabric for pillow back
  • 1 yard gridded fusible interfacing – cut a piece that is 20″ x 20″ to start.
  • 2 1/4 yards of pom pom trim
  • 18″ pillow form

SEE ALSO: Rustic Autumn free pattern

Step One: Gridded Interfacing

We are going to use the quilters grid interfacing as a “shortcut” way to ensure that we get even points when stitching our pillow top together. I love using this technique. It makes for super fast and accurate piecing and is wonderful for small projects like pillows.

The gridded interfacing is double-sided. One side has fusible adhesive. Begin by placing the fusible side up. The grid is broken down into 1″ squares. Since we are working with 3″ squares of fabric, each fabric square will cover 9 squares on the grid.

Begin laying out your design. You want to have 6 rows of 6 squares each. My design alternated various prints of fabric with stripes of the same fabric. I think it helped to give the pillow some continuity and balance out all of the busy prints.

For a bit of variety, I alternated the strips so that they go in different directions on the rows. I recommend working in small batches. Place the squares on top of the interfacing so that the edges of the fabric line up with the lines on the interfacing.

Particularly I think she is right, because for the author of this beautiful quilt project, it had a beautiful and incredible meaning.[et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_5]

If there is one thing I have learned in the course of time is that all and any editor who makes a quilt, crochet, knitting, embroidery or any other kind of form that comes from the heart, love what he or she does.

As I understand this PDF that was sent to us it was made by Art Gallery Fabrics and their website is artgalleryfabrics.com which I love to buy my materials and I do recommend that you see and buy here at artgalleryfabrics.com.

I don’t earn anything from Art Gallery to promote their products, I do it because I like and admire the types that they have and several new products and I know that there are several quilter’s that like them.

In the PDF that I was seeing there are several tips and notes on how to make this wonderful pattern, but I couldn’t help but notice that there is another site at the bottom of the pages lovepatchworkandquilting.com so I want to leave here the proper credits, since it’s in the PDF, it has to be here, don’t you agree?

This pattern reminded me a lot of my grandmother, that she liked to make this kind of bedspread for my uncle and my cousins, for her grandchildren and granddaughters. My grandmother’s life was literally to make these beautiful quilts of the most varied colors, patterns, filling, padding style, it was good times indeed.

I even feel sad that I don’t have one of the beautiful quilts she made, and that even I learned the basics of sewing machines from her, that makes me really happy.

2 reasons to do

2 reasons to this pattern is a fact of witnessing. The first reason I can talk about is the freedom that the quilt actually conveys to us, so much so that I ended up mentioning about my grandmother.

The second and even interesting reason is that besides freedom flowers bring us peace, tranquility, quiet and even calm our hearts even more in the face of a pandemic that we are experiencing all over the world.

So nothing better than a beautiful pattern of a quilt that gives two beautiful reasons to make it and forget this moment of pandemic, of confinement, of quarantine of our friends, relatives, relatives that we cannot be around now.

Free Sampler Quilt Tutorial Pattern

Free Sampler Quilt Tutorial is Right before I left for England, I finished piecing my Meet the Maker sampler quilt and got it too my quilter. I’m so excited to share the finished quilt and share with you how to make your own sampler quilt!

Free Sampler Quilt Tutorial from Riley Blake and Amy Smart

Free Sampler Quilt Tutorial
Free Sampler Quilt Tutorial

This quilt is made up of 5 different star block designs and 1 repeating setting block. I have links to instructions for all six quilt blocks below. I love the way the red Irish Chain blocks create a repeat design that sets off all of the other pieced blocks!

This wonderful work by Riley Blake and Amy Smart is in several stages that below in free PDF for you to download, so UNDERSTAND THAT: there are 7 PDF’s for you to download. However, if you are an intermediate level, make sure you do not need to download all of them, just the main one or in this case, the block you are in doubt with!

This quilt was made using fabrics from my first two fabric collections, a combination of Gingham Girls and Sunnyside Avenue. The two lines were always designed to play well together and I love the finished result!

This quilt finishes at 64″ x 84″

Fabric requirements include:

  • about 2 yards of white background fabric
  • 1st border (red): 1/4 yard
  • 2nd border (navy): 1 yard
  • Binding (green): 1/2 yard
  • Backing: 5 yards

This quilt pattern is a great one for using up favorite fabrics and scraps. All of the blocks in this quilt finish at 10″ x 10″, so it would also work for using up orphan 10″ x 10″ quilt blocks too!

Make 17 patchwork blocks using any combination of these 5 tutorials. (Or incorporate any 10″ x 10″ blocks that you like.) All of these blocks are part of the Riley Blake Meet the Makers series.

Here is my variety of pieced blocks before I assembled them. I loved playing with scrappy color combinations. If you look at them now, you can see that I only used the color red as an accent color in these blocks. That’s because I was planning to use red as my dominant color in my off-setting block. (heh heh! Aren’t I clever?)

The off-setting block in this quilt is an Irish Chain Block. You’ll need to make 18 of these blocks for this throw-size quilt. Once all of the blocks are created, lay out the blocks 5 blocks across, 7 rows down. Start with an Irish Chain block and alternate with the star blocks.

Here is how the first two rows will appear. Sew blocks together by rows and press seams toward the Irish Chain blocks. This will help the seams nest together when you start sewing the rows together. The borders I used for this quilt are as follows:

  • 1st border: cut 6 white strips 2 1/2″ x WOF (width of fabric). I also cut 4 navy 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares to use as cornerstones for this border
  • 2nd border: cut 7 strips (red) 2″ x WOF
  • 3rd border: cut 7 strips (navy)

This is the method that I use for adding borders to a quilt. It’s simple and always provides perfect results. The key is the pinning – don’t skip that part! That’s what will give you nice square quilt without waves in the borders.

Here is the method I use for basting a quilt and preparing it for quilting. You can quilt it on your own machine or by hand. Or, you can do what I did – have it done by Melissa of Sew Shabby Quilting.  I like that this quilt has a bit of a retro-vibe so I had her do a traditional Baptist Fan overall design.

Here’s a peek at the back of my quilt. I did a pieced back using my red apple fabric and the red hearts from Sunnyside Ave and the woven red gingham from Riley Blake Designs. There you go! I had fun taking this quilt to a local favorite spot for some beauty shots before all the autumn leaves are gone. Best time of the year!

Post Edit: A few people have asked if there is a printable version of this quilt. This time I’m afraid there is not. The reason this pattern is free is because all of the star blocks are provided by Riley Blake Designs. As such the videos/patterns are their intellectual property, not mine. REMEMBER THAT THIS MAGNIFICENT TUTORIAL IS NOT OURS AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SEE ALL OF IT ON THE SITE: diaryofaquilter.com, here you can see all tutorial with videos.
