Put a new spin on the traditional Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern by using a variety of modern florals in a summery quilt.

Materials

8 yards total assorted light prints (hexagons)
4 yards total assorted dark prints (hexagons)
4-5⁄8 yards solid white (sashing hexagons)
4 yards solid purple (border hexagons, binding)
7-2⁄3 yards backing fabric
92×110″ batting
Sturdy paper (or purchase precut 1″ hexagon templates; hexagons are measured by the ength of one side)
Water-soluble fabric pen or chalk marker

Finished quilt: 84×102″

Quantities are for 44⁄45″-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include 1⁄4″ seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order. To create the units in the quilt, Rebekah chose to vary the position of light and dark prints in each unit; she selected and cut fabrics as she made the flower units. The featured quilt is made with approximately two-thirds light prints and one-third dark prints.

From assorted light and dark prints, cut:

From solid purple, cut:

Enough 2-1⁄2″-wide bias strips to total 395″ for binding
456-3″ squares for border hexagons

Add Border

Referring to Scallop Marking Diagram, sew one round of solid purple border hexagons around quilt center. Add a second round of border hexagons to complete quilt top.

2. Remove paper templates from quilt top. Press wrong side of quilt top.

3. Referring to Scallop Marking Diagram, use a water-soluble pen or chalk marker to mark scallops along solid purple border on corners, sides, and bottom of quilt top. Mark top edge of quilt with a straight line. Hand- or machine-baste on marked lines; you will trim border after binding is sewn to quilt top.

They are made by a “resist” process in which the designer uses wax to prevent the dye from penetrating some areas of the fabric, leaving those areas undyed. The process can be repeated many times to create complex designs using many colors.

One thing I found out some time ago is that Batik is not a type of quilting, but types of fabrics, and they are based on marine cores whether they are warm or cool, the important thing is that they are colored in a variety of prints and cores, this is what I was told.

Oak leaf medallion quilt pattern free

Oak leaf medallion quilt is a very nice pattern and very well detailed as you can see in the image just below. One detail that draws attention on the subject is the colors that have been well detailed.

Personally, I like to play with motifs both in design space as well as on my quilts. They are free from the bounds of the block, allowing for so much more creativity. I also like mandala’s, which is pretty evident by the number of them in my collection! Therefore, this was the perfect opportunity to put them together for an EQ8 Block Spotlight.

The trick to making mandala’s in EQ8 is the use of the wreathmaker function in design mode. You can add an element, turn it into a wreath by selecting the number of clusters. I chose eight clusters for mine as I like the symmetry of 45-degree angles for spacing.

Then, you can select the cluster spacing, which is how far apart the elements are from each other. This is a great feature when adding multiple elements. When you add an element, you can pick a wider spacing so it will form a ring around your last element.

Finally, you can select the size of the cluster, which is the size of the element itself. In my case, I had to size a few elements down to make them fit neatly between each other. The trick with adding multiple elements is to add them one at a time.

Wreaths work best when the initial element is located at 0-degrees or 12 o’clock and is oriented north to south. You can then adjust the wreath to have the elements exactly where you need them.

If you don’t use the orientation indicated, the wreath may not come out as you envisioned. Sometimes, it may be a welcome surprise! Oak leaf medallion quilt is really wonderful.

When the Oak leaf medallion quilt was finished, it needed a little something extra, a border. Using the same elements as the medallion, I created an oak border with acorns and leaves. The colors changed along the axis and the elements alternated direction to keep it interesting. Then, a thin solid border was added as a frame. Again, I was looking for complements, not competition.

This would be relatively easy to make using fusible applique (granted the honey locust may be a little time consuming). For those with patience, it could be needle turned or machine appliqued.[et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_5]

I am not that patient! The quilt is 87″ square as designed, but could be made larger with a few extra borders, or smaller by leaving out the applique border, which adds 12″ to the size.
