Keep your fabrics separated by size, color, and away from dust and direct sunlight. Even scraps can be stored in organizer boxes. The more organized you are, the easier it is to find them. In the world of patchwork nothing is wasted, everything can be used and transformed into beautiful pieces! Make intelligent use of the fabrics to get the most out of each one. For in my time in patchwork I have found that we can make miracles with little fabric. Invest in plain fabrics that give a charm to the pieces and are also cheaper.

After choosing your project, separate the fabrics and cut squares, rectangles, and strips. Connect the sides right to right with a straight seam. If necessary, place pins to secure the seam. Don’t forget to open the seams when you are done. Make as many blocks as necessary to make the desired size of your quilt. A tip I give to beginners is to start by making baby quilts or blankets to cover or decorate.

Double Aster Block

The Double Aster Block is a classic design credited to Nancy Cabot. In Jinny Beyer’s book The Quilter’s Album of Patchwork Blocks, Nancy Cabot is said to have presented this block, which she called Double Windmill, in her Chicago Tribune column of October 26, 1936, and attributed it to an old Pennsylvania Dutch pattern pieced in Philadelphia as early as 1800.

Nancy Cabot was on a roll — 2 weeks later, she added 2 triangles to each quarter-block and the new block became Double Aster. She “fertilized” Double Aster with 8 more triangles and a dozen squares and created a new block.

I fell in love with Double Aster in the late 1990s, when I used it in this sampler quilt. (Sorry this is only one section of the quilt. The blocks are 16 inches, it is a big quilt!)

At that time, we developed a Double Aster class plan that we made available to stores. It was great for learning about the triangles in Sets A and B because the block has 4 different sized triangles. I had made 8-1/2, 12 and 16 inch Double Aster blocks, but not a 6 inch block.

When I first saw Peony in the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book, I thought it wa Double Aster and assumed it looked different because it was so small. Then I realized Peony had more stuff going on at the edges, which seemed to clutter the design. That settled my decision to make Double Aster for my quilt and share it with you. By the way, it was only after I decided that I compared the number of pieces. Double Aster has only 37 pieces, compared to 57 for Peony — wouldn’t you rather cut, sew and press 37 pieces than 57?

The Traditional Lone Star Quilt Pattern is one of the most recognizable quilt patterns in American quilting history, and with good reason. The sharp 45° angles of the star quilt points are eye-catching and memorable, not to mention the enormous eight-point star is timeless and beautiful.

Lone Star quilts are characterized by their eight-pointed star in the center of the quilt top. Each side of the quilt has two large points that point north, south, east, and west.

Traditionally, the large 8 point star will be centered on the quilt top, though I have seen a few modern interpretations where the star is offset to one side.

For our Modern Lone Star pattern, we wanted to keep the tradition of having the star as the focal point in the center, but with different blocking and piecing to give it a fresh, contemporary vibe.

Before being known as the “Lone Star” pattern, it was known as the “Mathematical Star” in England and the East Coast of the US. Other names include Star of Bethlehem, Star of the East, Morning Star, and Blazing Star.
Traditionally, the Lone Star is comprised of small diamond-shaped blocks.
Texan quilters adopted the name “Lone Star” from the Native Americans who originally came up with the name. Texans called it the Lone Star quilt after they became the “Lone Star State.”
The Lone Star was (and still is) a complex pattern that can be tricky to master. “Y” seams are used to add fabric to fill the gaps between the star’s points and can be tough to manage.
As pioneers traveled West, the women brought their quilting skills and community with them, which is how the “Mathematical Star” made its way West.

2-1⁄4 yards solid white (blocks, inner border)
3-1⁄2 yards total assorted dark or medium prints (blocks, inner border, outer border)
1⁄2 yard binding fabric
3- 1⁄4 yards backing fabric
57×72″ batting

Finished quilt: 48 -1⁄2×63 -1⁄2″
Finished block: 6×9″

Cut Fabrics

Cut pieces in the following order.

From solid white, cut:

90-5″ squares
104-2″ squares

From assorted dark or medium prints, cut:

90-5″ squares
244-2″ squares
Enough 3- 1⁄2″-wide segments to equal 230″ in length

From binding fabric, cut:

6-2- 1⁄2×42″ binding strips

Assemble Triangle-Squares for Quilt Scrap Attack Throw

Measurements include 1⁄4″ seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated. This is Quilt Scrap Attack Throw Free Pattern.

Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.

1. Use a pencil to mark two diagonal lines in an X on wrong side of each solid white 5″ square.

2. Referring to Diagram 1, layer a marked solid white square atop a dark or medium print 5″ square. Sew 1⁄4″ on each side of each diagonal line.

3. Cut layered 5″ squares horizontally and vertically into four 2 -1⁄2″ squares (Diagram 2). Cut each 2 -1⁄2″ square on its marked diagonal line to make eight triangles (Diagram 3).

4. Referring to Diagram 4, press each triangle open to make eight triangle-squares. Trim each triangle-square to 2″ square including seam allowances.

5. Repeat steps 2–4 to make 720 triangle-squares total (you will use 716).

Assemble Blocks and Quilt Center

1. Gather eight assorted dark or medium print 2″ squares and 16 triangle-squares.
2. Referring to Diagram 5 for triangle-square orientation and 2″ square placement, lay out pieces in six rows. Sew together pieces in rows; join rows to make a block. The block should be 6-1⁄2×9- 1⁄2″ including seam allowances.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make 25 blocks total.
4. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, lay out blocks in five rows, rotating every other block so seams will nest. Sew together blocks in rows. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row.
5. Join rows to make quilt center. Press seams in one direction. The quilt center should be 30 -1⁄2×45 -1⁄2″ including seam allowances.[et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_5]

Assemble and Add Borders

1. Gather eight triangle-squares, one dark or medium print 2″ square, and three solid white 2″ squares.
2. Referring to Diagram 6 for triangle-square orientation and 2″ square placement, lay out pieces in three rows. Join pieces in rows; join rows to make Unit A. The unit should be 6 -1⁄2×5″ including seam allowances.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make 10 A units total.
4. Referring to Diagram 7 for triangle-square orientation and 2″ square placement, repeat steps 1 and 2 to make 10 of Unit B.
5. Gather six triangle-squares, one dark or medium print 2″ square, and one solid white 2″ square.
6. Referring to Diagram 8 for triangle-square orientation and 2″ square placement, lay out pieces in four rows. Join pieces in rows; join rows to make Unit C. The unit should be 3 -1⁄2×6- 1⁄2″ including seam allowances.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to make 10 C units total.
8. Referring to Diagram 9 for triangle-square orientation and 2″ square placement, repeat steps 5 and 6 to make 10 of Unit D.
9. Gather nine triangle-squares, one dark or medium print 2″ square, and six solid white 2″ squares.
10. Referring to Diagram 10 for triangle-square orientation and 2″ square placement, lay out pieces in four rows. Join pieces in rows; join rows to make Unit E. The unit should be 6- 1⁄2″ square including seam allowances.
11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 to make four E units total.
12. Referring to Diagram 11, alternate five A units and five B units in a row; sew together to make a side inner border strip. The side inner border strip should be 6 -1⁄2×45 -1⁄2″ including seam allowances. Repeat to make a second side inner border strip.
13. Referring to Diagram 12, alternate five C units and five D units in a row; add a Unit E to each end. Sew together to make a top inner border strip. The top inner border strip should be 6-1⁄2×42-1⁄2″ including seam allowances. Repeat to make a bottom inner border strip.
14. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew side inner border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add top and bottom inner border strips to remaining edges. Press all seams toward inner border. The quilt center now should be 42- 1⁄2×57-1⁄2″ including seam allowances.
15. Sew assorted 3-1⁄2″-wide segments together to make a pieced strip 2-12″ in length. Cut strip to make:
- ▫ 2-3- 1⁄2×57-1⁄2″ outer border strips
- ▫ 2-3 -1⁄2×48-1⁄2″ outer border strips
16. Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, sew long outer border strips to long edges of quilt center. Add short outer border strips to remaining edges to complete quilt top. Press all seams toward outer border.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste.
