I started by adding the first log on the right side (3 o’clock position) of the center square. Then I added the remaining logs counterclockwise.

You can add the logs clockwise. The goal is to follow the same direction when adding the logs. So add all the logs in a clockwise direction. Or, counterclockwise.

To make the log cabin block with logs, use trimmings or strips cut from gardening. Just make sure that the piece of fabric is

– long enough to cover the piece being added to and
– one side of the strip has a straight edge.

– Lots of scraps or strips of fabric cut in various colors in varying widths from about 2 inches to 3 or 4 inches by at least 6 to 12 inches long.

Take a look at this quilt block assembly diagram. It shows the order of sewing the logs to and around the center square. (In the diagram below, the center may not look like a square, but it started out as a square.)

The center square is labeled ‘center’. The logs are numbered 1 through 12. Think of the sides of the center square as the 3 o’clock (right side), 6 o’clock (bottom), 9 o’clock (left side) and 12 o’clock (top) in a clock position.

For this log block, sew the first log (1) to the center at the 3 o’clock position. Then proceed counterclockwise around the center. Refer to this diagram as needed while assembling the block. Quilt Block Measurements In this tutorial, I am aiming for a 12-inch wonky log cabin.

To get the block to the desired size, you continue adding logs around the center in what are called rounds. After adding each round, use a square ruler to check the size of the block.
Add rounds until the block is 1 or 2 inches larger than the size you want. Then trim the block using a rotating square cutting ruler (you’ll see this being used when we get to this step).[opd id=”173″]

Logging On pattern is the kind of quilt you will want or desire to make for yourself or for your store as you prefer, so the main part that caught my attention the most is the issue of the colors used.

As you can see in the image above of the pattern it looks a lot like the login cab blocks, but it is prettier don’t you think? Logging On is a great open pattern and beautifully done for anyone who wants to make it.

The pattern was very well planned being that the blocks or squares are basically made with various other pieces of scraps or fabrics of the designer’s choice, however you can make the pattern in any color you like, i.e. use the fabric you find most beautiful.

The patterns that I particularly chose to make mine is with a flower theme, I bought about 20 different fabrics with flower bases of various colors and patterns, some with larger and some with smaller patterns.

In the bar part, she put a dark fabric that matches well with the other fabrics that formed the square. I really liked this idea, but I want to do it a little different, I actually want to do it with larger flowers and in black and finally in the final bar I want a red floral print with white.

Amber Fields as you can see is a wonderful pattern when it comes to quilt making. The colors chosen as well as the design made is really the difference between knowing how to choose and what to do once decided. So let’s talk a bit about this pattern?

Amber Fields

Amber Fields is made up of a pattern that is very nice to make and of course we always talk about it being the Simple Shoo-Fly quilt block. So we start to understand already how the pattern is. IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: This pattern is by Designer: Kathie Holland and the site allpeoplequilt.com.

Clover bloom, from the nightshade family, has large lobed leaves, and large blue flowers with rounded petals. The juices from the foliage and roots were mixed with milk in a dish, which was then set out to attract flies. When the flies fed from this concoction, they died, thus the origin of the common name, Shoofly Plant.

Simple Shoo-Fly quilt block

Made of half-square triangles at the four corners of the block instead of squares, the Shoo-Fly block is a simple quilt block that was often used to teach young girls the basics of quilt design and construction.

Because of its simplicity and opportunities for creativity and color play, the Shoo-Fly block is a popular block with Amish quilters.

Another variation of the origin of the name “shoo-fly” is the sweet, rich Amish dessert known as shoo-fly, a gooey molasses bottom topped with spicy cake in a flaky pie crust, that is said to have attracted flies while it baked.

A quilter may decide to use up small scraps of fabric in the blocks, making a “scrappy” quilt or create a stunning overall 2-color scheme.

To show off the geometry of the design, the blocks were typically joined together with sashing (lattice) strips with a cornerstone square of a different color at the point where the strips meet.

Shoofly is a symbol that possibly identifies a person who can guide and help; a
person who helped slaves escape along the Underground Railroad and who knew
the codes.

There’s also theories it originated from an Amish pie recipe which was said to attract flies as it was baking. The pie was fragrant and had a gooey molasses base, spicy cake on top and encrusted in flaky pastry – I can almost smell this and I’m sure it attracted more than just flies!

Quilts were believed to be used as codes for the Underground Railroad and the theory is a Shoo Fly quilt identified someone who could offer assistance to runaway slaves. This person may be a former slave, a white ally or someone still enslaved themselves, and the quilt was a sign of hope for those looking for protection and shelter.

Whatever version of history you choose to believe, these theories give us so much more appreciation of the simple Shoo Fly block, and it justifies why it belongs in the Classic Quilt Blocks family. It may be simple, but it’s versatile and still relevant in our modern day quilting world.

The block is made up of simple squares and HST’s, and to determine the unfinished size of each grid unit you simply divide the finished block size by three and add seam allowances. As an example, for a 6″ (finished) block the unfinished unit sizes would be 2 1/2″ square.

In next week’s step by step tutorial, I will give you a Cutting Chart for six sizes of the Shoo Fly block to save you doing the math, and you can add this to your Classic Quilt Blocks chart collection. In my search I spent more than 4 hours looking for something to make that was different and pretty at the same time. That’s when I remembered to make something hexagonal and very different to give as a gift.

And in these searches after 4 intense hours I found a wonderful blog by Geta Grama, the Romanian quilter and see Quilt Hexagons Floral. I was amazed together with my husband at this amazing pattern and you will agree that it is really beautiful.

Sewing hexagons is easy and fun! You can sew them in a waiting room, take them with you on your travels, in short… it is practically therapy.

Hexagons (nicknamed hexies) are traditionally sewn using a process called English paper stitching (or EPP). Each hexagon (or EPP shape) is made individually by folding the fabric around the paper shape and pinning it in place using basting or glue.

You sew as many shapes as you need, which are joined together to form a pattern or a new “fabric”. The EPP stitching technique allows the use of other geometric shapes, such as triangles, squares, diamonds, kites, elongated hexagons, and half-hexagons. The shapes can be grouped in endless combinations to create beautiful patterns.
But, let’s get back to our hexagon.
